There
are various aspects of dog training. First, the most important step, are
basics that dog learns when becomes a member of a new family: where's his
"place", where he eats, where's his water dish, what he may do
and what he may not... Though these are things that come along spontaneously
(it ought to be thus), I assort them in training because they're important
for harmonious living of dog and family, they help in further practice with
dog and they're not always easy to learn.
Obedience training is coming next. Learning of commands that are used in dog's walks: heel, sit, come... Another training category is so called "ring training" which is necessary for dog handling at shows. There are many sport competitions for dogs in which all breeds may participate under certain limitations: earthdog, weight pulling, races, agility... Stud dogs must be in stud shape, show dogs must be in show shape. That can be accomplished by training. Top level training is used in sport purpose as for needs of army and police. Base of every training is to engraft conditional reflex in dog's mind - explicitly said: when dog hears command, dog does required act, because he's taught if he do that, he'll get a reward. So there's positive conditional reflex for precise subsequence of events - command - act - reward. When reflex is set up, apropos when command is learned once, there is no need to reward every time because he'll always do what's told him to do if the reflex is strong enough i.e. command is learned well. However learnt matter should be refreshed occasionally, to confirm acts induced by reflex. Contrary to positive conditional reflex which is described in the preceding paragraph, there is also negative reflex in which subsequence of events is different: command - act - punishment avoidance (note the difference: in positive reflex we had reward, here we have punishment avoidance). Learning by this method is more difficult for both - trainer and dog, while results are the same or about the same so method of reward is more commended. Positive reflexes are faster and easier to create though negative may last longer. Best results are accomplished in combination of these two methods, but some commands need learning by punishment only (for instance - command: Leave it!). |
